Power of Nutrition and Food to eradicate malnutrition and hunger among tribal & rural children and communities

Need

The Global Hunger Index 2019 ranks India at 94 out of 117 countries on the basis of three leading indicators — prevalence of wasting and stunting in children under 5 years, under 5 child mortality rate, and the proportion of undernourished in the population.

Malnutrition & hunger is the worst form of non-communicable disease and nutrition deficiency is the root cause to most of the ailments and can cause poor cognitive development, weakness and fatigue and less productivity in every day of life.

Malnourished child has a higher risk of death from common childhood illnesses such as diarrhea, pneumonia, and malaria.

Undernourished mothers have a higher chance of giving low birth weight babies and about 51.4% of women in reproductive age between 15-49 years are anemic as per Food Security Report.

Action

  • We provide 300 days nutritional snack to 150 rural and tribal children aged between 3 to 15 as per nutrition chart by dietician to build immunity and fight against multiple illnesses and eradicate malnutrition.
  • Sai Annalakshmi initiatives, feeding nutritious food to 100 tribal children and old-age every Thursday/on special occasion – “A step to eradicate hunger.”
  • Feeding Breakfast for 50 school going children during school days and plan to extend to reach more children.
  • Preventing and treating anemia – a special focus
  • Awareness on Food waste, Kitchen Garden, Diet and Nutrition education, eating habits, screening camps and wellness programs for kids and mothers.
  • To mobilize resources and innovative models to accomplish zero hunger and eradicate malnutrition.

Outcome

Our diet programs, nutrition snack & food give adequate micronutrients to build immunity, improve intellect and cognitive development and prevent from multiple illnesses in rural and tribal children.
